Souled: Finding My Roots
My book Souled is a collection of my images from the last 10+ years from my travels across our beautiful nation. So what is Souled? Souled is a brand my bride Jesica and I started several years ago to represent our love for the woods. I always say some people get their recharge by putting their feet in some sand on a beach. Some people love walking around in a quaint little town. Some like the bright city lights looking for a place to eat. Then there are those of us who love to be under the canopy of leaves as the trees stand tall around us! So when I captured my image "Whisper" I started to visualize a few ideas. The definition of soul is the immaterial essence, spiritual principle, or inner life force of a human being. So I thought about using my image "Whisper" then adding roots to the bottom of it to spell out Souled. My creative nephew and some of his friends brought it to life. So this book is a collection of how I see the world. When you capture an image, you capture what you think belongs, but just as important you leave out what you feel doesn't fit.
The book is composed of 5 chapters. The first starting to where it all started, the Choestoe Valley. The second chapter goes to one of my favorite places on Earth, the Great Smoky Mountains. The 3rd is the Blue Ridge Parkway. The 4th is the Golden coast of Georgia and South Carolina and the final chapter is the stunning mountains of out west. The tree rings at the beginning and end of the book represents the American Chestnut which use to cover 25% of the forest of Appalachia until they were attacked by a fungus that came from an Asian Chestnut in the early 1900's. I wanted the book to be very minimalist so I didn't add any page numbers, image names, or descriptions. I wanted the book to be solely about the images. I did add in the back of the book all the thumbnails of the photos with their name in case you find one you love and would want on your wall! So if you come across an image that moves you you can play around and see what you would name it! My process always starts with capturing the image, editing it, then sitting back and coming up with a name. I thought it might be fun to bring you in on a part of the process. I hope you enjoy the book and I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support! Thank you!
